Carmi Castagna has owned her own hair salon in Crest Hill for more than 40 years. Recently, she has been struggling with the skyrocketing cost of her private insurance. Last year Carmi left her previous plan when her premiums jumped over 30% to $400 a month. Unable to afford the increase, she switched to a new policy that would cost only $300 per month. Unfortunately, Carmi recently received notice that the premium on her new policy is going up to $380 a month, even though she has made no claims.
"I often wonder how far I can go. How can I ever think about retirement when all I can do is continue to work, make a mortgage payment, pay my business expenses and pay for insurance? It is insane," Carmi said.
